Foster Grandparents Program in Klamath County

Last Updated 4/7/2025

The Foster Grandparents Program is celebrating its 50th year in Southern Oregon—and it's looking for more compassionate adults in the Chiloquin area to join this impactful initiative. Designed for individuals aged 55 and older, the program connects seniors with children who require additional support in school and after-school settings.

Leslie Maxfield, Volunteer Coordinator for the program in Klamath County, is on a mission to recruit more Foster Grandparents for Chiloquin Elementary School and potential new sites, such as Chiloquin Learns After School, run by Chiloquin Visions in Progress. “We currently have two Foster Grandparents placed in Chiloquin, but we know there is room for more. Programs like CVIP’s after-school initiative would be a wonderful fit for our volunteers,” says Maxfield.

The program supports low-income seniors by providing a $4.00 per hour stipend, mileage reimbursement for school hours and in-service meetings, and monthly gatherings that include lunch, guest speakers, and social activities. Volunteers receive the joy of mentoring local children while staying active and connected to the community.

Additionally, recognition events are held twice a year to acknowledge their service. As part of this year’s 50th anniversary celebration, special activities and events are planned for volunteers this summer, making now a great time to get involved.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Foster Grandparent, please contact Leslie Maxfield at (541) 539-1208 to learn more.
