Plant a Seed: Read! Takes Root at the Chiloquin Library
This summer, the Chiloquin Library and Friends of the Chiloquin Library are helping young readers discover that books and gardens have something in common: they both grow with a little care and attention.
As part of this year's "Plant a Seed: Read!" Summer Reading Program, children are not only exploring new stories but also getting their hands dirty by creating a brand-new garden alongside the library. The garden gives participants a chance to experience firsthand how seeds become plants while learning valuable lessons about patience, responsibility, and caring for the natural world.
Throughout the summer, the garden will continue to grow with the help of the young gardeners. Every Thursday, Deb will lead fun, hands-on gardening activities, teaching children how to care for their plants, understand what helps them thrive, and appreciate the many benefits of gardening. Participants will also explore the library's collection of gardening books, discovering how reading can inspire curiosity, answer questions, and spark a lifelong interest in growing flowers, vegetables, and native plants.
The combination of books and gardening creates a unique learning experience where children can connect what they read with what they see happening in the soil each week. Whether they're watering seedlings, identifying plants, or reading about how gardens support wildlife, each activity encourages exploration and learning in a meaningful way.
The library's Summer Reading Program is about much more than reading books—it's about cultivating curiosity, building new skills, and creating experiences that children will remember long after summer ends.
If you haven't visited the library lately, stop by to see how the garden is growing and learn more about the exciting activities taking place throughout the summer. We look forward to watching both our young readers and their gardens flourish together!
