CTAC Week 1 Recap: Outdoor Adventure Week
What an incredible week of learning and adventure! Our Chiloquin Teen Adventure Camp teens have been exploring the outdoors, discovering new skills, and learning from amazing community partners. The first week started with everyone getting to know each other on Monday at the Chiloquin Community Center.
💧 Tuesday – Klamath Outdoor Science School (KOSS)
Students explored the Wood River on a guided hike, learning about the area's unique ecosystem while monitoring water quality at the mouth of the river. Through a fun hands-on experiment using a giant parachute, they discovered how water temperature affects dissolved oxygen and why healthy streams are so important for fish and other wildlife.
🔨 Wednesday – Klamath Community College
Our campers toured the Klamath Community College campus with a special focus on the Apprenticeship and Skilled Trades programs. They learned basic carpentry skills, built their own birdhouses, and even began constructing a picnic table that they'll complete during a future visit. It was a great opportunity to introduce students to hands-on careers and technical education available right here in Klamath County.
🔥🌲 Thursday – Klamath Outdoor Science School
The day was packed with outdoor science and exploration! Students participated in a forest fire simulation to better understand how wildfires spread and how land managers work to protect our forests. They also learned how foresters measure tree circumference to estimate growth and age, completed a "Zoom In / Zoom Out" observation exercise in their camp journals.
🌲 Friday – Lava Beds National Monument
Campers watched a demonstration on weaving a traditional fire basket. The adventure concluded with an exploration of the incredible landscapes and history of Lava Beds National Monument.
