CLAS Kicks Off Another Exciting Year of Learning and Fun!

Last Updated 10/13/2026 • Posted in CLAS

Chiloquin Learns After School (CLAS) is off to a great start! The program welcomed 22 students for its first week of the 2026–2027 school year, bringing another year of hands-on learning, creativity, and friendship to Chiloquin Elementary School.

Operated by Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP), CLAS provides a safe, welcoming place for students in kindergarten through sixth grade to learn, explore, and grow after school.

Exploring Nature and Learning New Skills

Students wasted no time jumping into fun and educational activities during their first week!

One of the highlights was a nature walk, where students collected different types of leaves and learned more about the natural world around them. Back in the classroom, they used crayons to create leaf rubbings, revealing the interesting patterns and veins found in each leaf.

Students also got their hands dirty planting spider plant babies, known as spiderettes. Along the way, they learned how to care for houseplants, including the importance of water, sunlight, and patience. This simple activity teaches responsibility while helping children develop an appreciation for living things.

Building Confidence Through Reading

Reading and writing remain important parts of the CLAS experience.

During the first week, one first-grade student celebrated an exciting accomplishment by reading an entire book! The student also learned how to use a special reading pen to help pronounce unfamiliar words. Tools like these can help young readers build confidence and develop the skills they need to read independently.

These moments may seem small, but they represent some of the biggest rewards of CLAS—watching children discover what they can accomplish with a little encouragement and support.

A Dedicated Team Makes It Possible

Behind every successful after-school program is a team of caring adults, and CLAS is fortunate to have a wonderful group supporting our students.

Our program staff, including Sami, Paula, and Lacey, have helped make the start of the school year a success. Their dedication, patience, and enthusiasm create a positive environment where children feel comfortable learning, trying new things, and building friendships.

The program also benefits from additional aides at Chiloquin Elementary School who can step in when regular staff members are unavailable. This support helps CLAS maintain a consistent and welcoming experience for students.

Help Us Keep CLAS Growing!

As CLAS continues to serve local families, we are always looking for ways to strengthen and expand the program.

CVIP is currently seeking additional paid program aides who enjoy working with elementary school children. Aides help students with reading, math, creative projects, outdoor activities, and other enrichment opportunities.

We also welcome community volunteers, business sponsors, and organizations interested in sharing their time, talents, or resources. Whether you lead a special activity, donate supplies, or help fund the program, every contribution makes a difference.

Those interested in joining or supporting CLAS can contact CVIP at 541-783-7780, email [email protected], or visit our office at the Chiloquin Community Center.

Looking Forward to a Great Year!

With 22 students already participating, enthusiastic staff, and a full year of activities ahead, CLAS is looking forward to another successful school year.

From discovering the wonders of nature to building reading skills and making new friends, every afternoon gives children another chance to learn something new.

We're excited to see what our students will accomplish in the months ahead!
